Series Snapshot ~ 5/7/2026

Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.

A new action series, Man on Fire, has taken the most watched title at Netflix this week, as Unchosen viewership drops off. The new spy thriller is an adaptation of the 1980 novel by A.J. Quinnell, which was also developed into a 2004 film starring Denzel Washington. In this version, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II takes on the role of John Creasy, a former CIA agent haunted by survivor’s guilt after leading a failed mission that wiped out his team. Creasy finds himself suddenly tasked with protecting a teenage girl (Billie Boullet) from terrorists. In both the book and film, this character, Poe, is a young child, but the new age adjustment allows her to be a more active participant in the duo’s survival. Critical reception for Man on Fire is a mixed bag. Across the board there’s glowing praise for Abdul-Mateen II’s performance, and appreciation for filming on location in Rio de Janeiro, which serves as the backdrop for intense, meticulously choreographed action sequences. However, many point out that Man on Fire’s seven episodes suffer from slow pacing in the middle, and the aging up of Poe removes some of the character’s innocence, as well as the thematic tension that the 2004 film held. Man on Fire was created by Kyle Killen, and all episodes are available now.

At Hulu, ABC original cop drama The Rookie is back on top this week, after airing a successful finale to its eighth season on May 4th. Surprisingly, despite following a formula and episode structure that feels familiar and nostalgic to millennials and older generations, The Rookie is a huge hit with Gen Z. The show’s quippy comedic beats are easily clipped into thirty-to-sixty- second TikToks and Instagram Reels, giving the series some virality on social media. The cast, which includes Nathan FillionEric WinterMelissa O'Neil, and Alyssa Diaz are also highly active on the platforms, participating in trends around the show and contributing to the digital impact. The finale was well received, ending the season on a brutal cliffhanger after some long awaited romantic payoff between Tim (Winter) and Lucy (O’Neil). The Rookie will return for more procedural action with its ninth season, slated for January of 2027. The Rookie was created by Alexi Hawley

HBO’s divisive new season of Euphoria holds strong at the top, ahead of Rooster. The new season jumps forward five years narratively, exploring the early twenties of the show’s original high-school cast. Rue, played by Zendaya, is now working as a drug mule, while Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) are engaged and insulated. Cassie pursues a career as an OnlyFans model, Jules (Hunter Schafer) is studying art while earning cash as a sugar baby, and Lexi (Maude Apatow) now works in Hollywood as an assistant. Following the untimely passing of Angus Cloud, his character Fezco has been written to be serving a thirty year prison sentence. These are not the only major changes – a complete reworking of genre, atmosphere, and soundscape have reshaped Euphoria into something different, which also seems to be the main point of criticism- moving the world out of high school has stripped the show of its original thesis. Viewers are also critical of how almost every major female character in the series is involved in sex work in one form or another, and fans are left feeling unsure what season three is trying to say. Euphoria was created by Sam Levinson

The Boys dominates the charts for Amazon Prime Video, with its gripping final season nearing its finale. The Boys has been receiving excellent reviews, with season five rated only marginally behind its highest scoring third season. After a somewhat subdued fourth season caused a small dip in ratings and viewership, the new episodes have experienced more than a rebound. This high engagement is driven by creator Erik Kripke’s statements that “no one is safe”, and as the show gallops on, audiences are on the edge of their seats around who will survive each episode. With just two installments remaining, including a series finale set for May 20th, The Boys may just end on a higher note than it started- a rarity these days. Antony Starr’s Homelander is quickly going down as one of the greatest villain performances in television, and The Boys holds nothing back in its visual effects and brutal action sequences. Daveed Diggs has also received a few shoutouts for his scene stealing evangelical supe “Oh Father”, and is seen as a welcome addition. The Boys was created by Erik Kripke, and also stars  Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, and Laz Alonso

Jonathan Tropper’Your Friends & Neighbors continues its streak at AppleTV, in spite of mixed reviews. The series began with an excellent first season, but has struggled to maintain ratings as it explores new ideas and directions. Audiences aren’t sure what to make of the series, which seems uncertain of the tone it’s going for. At best, Neighbors is a binge-worthy dark comedy, but often stumbles when trying to make greater social commentary, which comes across as heavy handed and too on-the-nose. Some are also irritated by the constant narration and commentary from Coop, played by Jon Hamm, and would prefer the series to show, not tell. However, there’s plenty of praise for James Marsden, whose addition has proven a shot in the arm for the show and adds a sinister eccentricity to every scene. Now about halfway through, season two has a finale scheduled for June 10, and Your Friends & Neighbors was renewed for a third season, likely to air sometime in late spring of 2027.

For Disney subscribers, Maul: Shadow Lord is again the most streamed series. The highly acclaimed animated spinoff also had its finale this week, releasing episodes nine and ten on Star Wars’ fan-holiday, May 4th. The final episodes scored highly with viewers and critics, featuring dazzling lightsaber duels and a surprise appearance from one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. Maul’s audience has embraced the sci-fi noir theme, and appreciate the mature themes and unsanitized violence, sometimes making comparisons to Andor. It’s possible we’ll see writers explore grittier adventures within the Star Wars universe, given Maul’s excellent viewership and renewal for a second season. Fans love the pairing of Sam Witwer, voice of Maul, with Gideon Adlon, who plays his new prodigy, Devon, and the duo’s ability to record their scenes in-person adds familiality and presence to their on screen-relationship. Maul: Shadow Lord was created by Dave Filoni, and will be back with a second season early to mid 2027.
