Box Office Round-Up ~ 5/4/26
The first weekend of May started with the long-awaited return of Miranda Priestly and co. to the big screen, as The Devil Wears Prada 2 won its debut weekend as expected with a hefty $76.7 million. It’s the best opening weekend for a live action comedy in almost fifteen years, bolstered in part by the original’s enduring popularity since it hit theaters way back in 2006.
Michael continued its hot streak in second place with a sophomore weekend gross of $54.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $184 million. It should pass $200 million easily in the next week. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie celebrated its fifth weekend in theaters by passing the $400 million mark, grossing $12.1 million in third place.
Project Hail Mary has remained in the top five for seven weekends now, no small feat in the modern age of moviegoing. In fourth place, it grossed $8.5 million to reach $318 million overall in the U.S. In fifth place, Adam Scott-led horror title Hokum from Irish writer/director Damian McCarthy debuted with $6.4 million.
Mother’s Day Weekend sees a curious trio of new releases. Mortal Kombat II is the highlight, but there’s also Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft—The Tour, a 3D concert film co-directed by Billie Eilish and none other than James Cameron. And we can’t forget The Sheep Detectives, a “Knives Out by way of Babe" comedy that sees a flock of sheep solving the murder of their beloved shepherd, played by Hugh Jackman. There’s always a little something for everyone at the movies.
